Alberta OHS: Act, Regulation and Code
Alberta's workplace safety law has three layers: the OHS Act (general duties of employers, workers, supervisors and others), the OHS Regulation, and the OHS Code (the detailed technical rules). For field crews the most-used Code parts are: Part 2 Hazard Assessment, Elimination and Control; Part 4 Chemical Hazards (exposure limits, including for hydrogen sulphide); Part 5 Confined Spaces; Part 9 Fall Protection; Part 18 PPE; Part 28 Working Alone; Part 32 Excavating and Tunnelling; Part 37 Oil, Gas and Geothermal Energy.
Who it applies to: Most provincially regulated work sites in Alberta: employers, supervisors, workers, contractors and prime contractors. Federally regulated work (e.g. interprovincial pipelines/trucking) may fall under federal rules instead.
“This Part applies if (a) a worker is working alone at a work site, and (b) assistance is not readily available if there is an emergency or the worker is injured or ill.”
