Commercial vehicles need a valid Commercial Vehicle Inspection Program (CVIP) certificate and decal, done annually at a licensed facility. Carriers need a maintenance and inspection program, and drivers do trip inspections (Commercial Vehicle Safety Regulation). New Class 1 drivers go through Alberta's Class 1 Learning Pathway, which replaced MELT on April 1, 2025.

Who it applies to: Owners, carriers and drivers of commercial trucks, trailers and buses in Alberta, including vac and hydrovac units.

“trucks, truck-tractors, semi-trailers, trailers and combinations thereof exceeding a registered GVW of 11,794 kg when operating intra-provincially”
Quoted from Alberta.ca, Vehicle Inspection Program: Commercial vehicles (one of the listed categories requiring annual inspection), checked Oct 2026

Official sources (checked Oct 2026)

I couldn't verify an official Alberta.ca page listing all licence classes (Class 3 details); check with a registry agent or Alberta.ca.
