Federally regulated carriers must use a Transport Canada-certified electronic logging device (ELD) under the federal Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations. Alberta has its own Drivers' Hours of Service Regulation for vehicles operating only within Alberta. Oilfield service vehicles may have specific cycle/permit provisions; check the official text.

Who it applies to: Commercial truck and bus carriers and drivers. Which rules apply depends on whether you operate only in Alberta or across borders.

“The Alberta Drivers' Hours of Service Regulation applies to carriers and drivers who operate the following vehicles only within Alberta: commercial vehicles that are registered for a weight of 11,794 kilograms or more; commercial vehicles with a manufactured seating capacity of 11 persons or more, including the driver.”
